Comments:Springsteen played the first time at Memorial Hall in 1975. Zeppelin played KC only twice I believe, in November 1969 and in August of 1970. After the 1970 concert, it was reported they said they'd never return to our city. In the following years they played St. Louis numerous times and always skipped KC. Don't know what the problem was.

Comments:Steve, Thanks for the post. According to my sources on the web, the concert with April Wine at Municipal occured on December 8, 1979. Also, I found that the November '78 Memorial Hall concert had The Babys as opening act not Morningstar. The Styx/Morningstar concerts were in September of 1977. I've updated the page accordingly. Needless to say, Styx has played Kansas City very many times. Bob

Comments:I've just now discovered this site. It's brilliant. I've researched many old shows in town but there are about a dozen on here that I can't believe I've never heard of... Of course I spotted a couple of errors as far as dates, duplicates, etc. but I'm guessing that a lot of these are from random people like me emailing you about shows that they attended. For instance, the first concert I attended was Styx at Municipal Auditorium in 1978, and the support band was April Wine. It wasn't at Kemper and although they supported them a few times earlier, Morningstar was not there. Cheers

Comments:A question, I have been trying for years to find out the name of a song heard on WNEW fm around 1972-73 with part of the lyrics being " give me a ticket to the central line" I think. It was a male singer and had a heavy fuzz guitar in and out of it. If anyone knows I been trying for 30 years to figure it out. Also I still have my ticket from woodstock $7.00 Sunday Aug. 17 1969 10:00 AM.

Comments:Lived in Atchison, Kansas at the time. I played lead guitar in a band in high school. Only saw two concerts while in high school before I moved to Oklahoma. Both concerts were in KC. First was Jimi Hendrix in 1968 with Quicksilver Messenger Service. Poster is wrong. May have supposed to have been whoever was Cat Mother, but not who played. I went home and immediately bought the album and learned to play Pride of Man. Second concert was Iron Butterfly with The Grateful Dead in 1969. Moved to Oklahoma after graduated from high school in May, 1969.

Comments:Just a couple of things, I attended several of the events listed, but their are a couple corrections and additions. The Jethro Tull concert I went to (the first of several) was right after Auqualung came out and it was at Memorial Hall in KCKS. It was General Admission and we got seats down front stage left. I beleive you've got it at Cowtown Ballroom. I don't recall the group coming twice that year but if they did, you need to add that event. If it just once. Then the venue listed is wrong. We saw them the following year at Municipal Auditorium after Thick as a Brick was released. The Eagles were not very well received by the crowd and the Eagles expressed their displeasure. They were just becoming known at that point. Also in the winter of '72 the Allman Brothers Band was at Municipal Audiotrium. We had great seats for that one too. I can't remember who they were with I don;t recal if at that time the second death had yet occurred in the band. But they were quite the show

I just turned 60 years old and it seems like yesterday I was tuned in and turned on from Little Rock! Keep it up and wishing you success in bringing back great memories to your faithful listeners! I am enjoying, listening to the archive's of your shows that are still with us. Thanks again, your efforts are not forgoten by me, I will always be a loyal listener! Love, Peace, and Happiness!! Where have I heard that before?

Comments:From 1971 through 1973 when I was in High School, KAAY Beaker Street was the biggest thing happening for me during that period. As a musician, that is where I first heard my favorite music. The station would fade in and out and could only be caught at night. Every campout was centered around Beaker Street and occassionaly Beaker Theater. I would love to have recordings of those old broadcast!

Comments:Thanks for the site! I was at virtually every concert from 1967-1971 having either helping run sound, promote, providing equipment, or being invited backstage. After deciding to return to college (and getting a real job) Rick Backus assumed my job as manager of the Pro Shop in the Freedom Palace...and what a ride the Palace was...lots of stories there! Does anyone know what happened to Mike_____ the photographer at the palace? He had an incredible folio of the palace.) Some of the bands played the Palace that were listed at Memorial. When I was managing Backwood Memory (remember those great guys?) we opened and toured with some of the bands of that time. We played a number of jobs with Kansas...great era the late sixties early 70's !!!

Comments:In case you'd like to add it to your list, I can tell you that Steppenwolf played Municipal Auditorium on Feb 22, 1969. The opening band was KC's own, and my buddies, The Mystic Number National Bank. I have my ticket stub from that concert so I'm certain of the date. In 1971 and 1972 I worked at KUDL and saw many concerts, but I have no idea of the dates, but people like James Brown, Bobby Womack, Billy Preston, all did shows in KC. I'll dig around some when I get a chance and see if I can get you any more info on any of them. The only other one I have a stub from was my first concert and your first listed one, The Beatles on 9/17/64. I was in Row G of the lower grandstand for $4.50. Wish I could see a show today for $4.50!

Now back around that time I seen Yes twice (Both times I was like on the 2nd or 3rd row/Center , because of having a friend that was employed at Capers Corners)Anyway, one of these yes concerts was "In The Round" and that one was NOT the Yes Concert that had Donovan open. But in 77 he was on the bill with yes and not shown ubove. Thanks From Tom

Comments:(part II) enjoyed the music with an evening breeze and our feet on the railing. Also, Frampton played in KC (again?)in 78 at Royal's stadium. I wasnt in KC in summer '77. Did the entire 'Comes Alive'set. Sounded awesome outdoors, just like the album! I was on the field, about 5 people from the stage, dead center, on a friend's shoulders. I had wanted to try to get the same seats as had for Chicago but was glad my friends insisted we go onto the field. We could watch Frampton's fingers and make eye contact with him. Some really great memories. Thanks again!!

Comments:Thank you! Thank you! Your list helped me to remember several concerts I had forgotten and what bands played together. Like I knew I had seen Santana, Eagles, Steve Miller at an outdoor Summer Jam type concert, but couldnt remember if same concert or different and who else played. I do have two corrections/additions. In 1973 I saw Chicago at Royal's Stadium, for sure. It was my first concert and there were 7 of us 13-year-olds. Someone's mom drove us there in her restored yellow convertable with white leather seats and big tail fins with the top down. We got there several hours early to get good seats because it was general admission no less. As we sat waiting in the early afternoon heat with everyone at the gate, someone asked what time it was. The crowd cheered when two different answers were shouted out: "25 or 6 to 4"and "Does anybody really care what time it is?" We managed to get front row seats right behind the dug out on first base side and enjoyed the music with an eveni

Comments:I remember lying in bed around 11 pm or midnight listening to KWKI as I had been for most of the week thinking how completely awesome the dj's were spinning song after song. It even seemed that there were few if any commercial breaks. Having declared it the absolute best fucking station on earth but then.... without any notice or warning of any kind the programming shifted immediately to Christian. Wow, I'll never forget it. KWKI never to be heard again.

Comments:in 1980, about one week after the death of john lennon, there was this fm radio station no longer airing. they had a special one hour or so of lennon and the beatles up to his death. i put it on cassette. and thru the years i lost that cassete. i really need the program again. it was very touching and chilling. it followed the boys thru the early years and it focused more on the death of lennon; the shooting, the doctors comments, and follow-ups. it used up both sides of my cassette so i.m assuming it was about an hour and a half. someone please help me get the program back.

Comments:Excellent quick summary of Beaker Street. We were in our early 20s back in the early 70s and LOVED Beaker Street!. Every Saturday night if we couldn't pick up the signal at someone's house, we'd all jump into our cars and drive down to the shores of lake michigan where typically we'd get lucky and listen until 2:00a.m. Of course then we'd stay tuned for Beaker Theatre. Did Doc Holiday eve guest host for Clyde? I want to say he did the show for awhile but like everyone else...memory fade. Thanks for the tip on the current Beaker Street on Sundays. I'm going to try it. And thanks for keeping these amazinf memories alive.

Comments:Thank you for this history. Born and bred in KC, these first two stations especially KCJC meant a great deal to me. They turned me on to Frank Zappa, and Blues music which later on I kind of made of living at. I remember DJ's Bill Sites or Sikes and of course the legendary Little Willy. What a shame that these stations did not last. KKFI kind captures a little of that magic but of course times change and these stations were certainly products of that brief stint of hippiedom in our little cowtown. But hey, nothin wrong with a little bittersweet nostalgia from time to time. What ever happened to some of those DJ's. I'd just love to say thanks. Mark DuFresne

I too grew up on KAAY and the Underground Radio of Mr. Clyde Clifford...between 1969-1972, when the show went off the air...during the summers my best friends and I would "camp out" in my parents travel trailer parked in the back of our property. With minimal lighting and a radio with not only AM, but FM and all those other bands..some big old radio of my dads...the four of us buddies...all between the ages of 9-12 would hang out and listen to the mysterious radio show and the cool music...unheard of on the AM....and we had NO FM stations at all that could penetrate the Ozark foothills of my hometown....it was so cool...looking at stashes of Playboy we had swiped from somebodies dad...jammin...playing cards.....we recorded a lot on a small panasonic cassette player...random bits of pieces of audio of us in the background while the tunes played...i still have a couple somewhere...anyway, it definitely influenced my life and I tune in as often as I c

I'd fall asleep and sometimes wake up and listen to Beaker Theater. I also listened to KWTO AM out of Springfield. At 8 or 9 o'clock they switched from their country music programing to rock and they signed off at mid night with Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner. Beaker Street was very influential in my musical interests. First heard Alice Cooper, REO Speedwagon and numerous others I can not recall. I am now 51 yrs. old.

Lost lots of sleep listening until 2 AM, as I recall, and then Beaker Theater afterwards. I remember The Little Barn as a sponsor of Beaker Street. Thanks for exposing all of us to Zappa, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Everything is Everything, Deep Water Reunion, King Crimson, Canned Heat, Grand Funk Railroad and all the rest. My tastes in music have grown to include Classical, but I'll always love the music of my teens and twenties, and Clyde Clifford was a huge part of that. Thank you, Clyde, for all the great music and memories!

Comments:Beaker Street, Hopefully Clyde will read this! On spring break of 1970, my senior year in high school, 5 of my best friends and I went on a 10 day fishing trip from Des Moines to Bull Schoals lake in Arkansas. We were a, not so famous, garage band but had alot of fun anyway. On one of those 10 days, 4 of the 6 of us drove south from Bull Schoals to Little Rock to meet Clyde. KAAY was voted the #1 listened too radio station at our school, Roosevelt High in Des Moines, Iowa so we wanted to meet "The Main Man" of Beaker Street. We went to the radio station downtown that afternoon and was told that Clyde was not there. He does his show at the transmitter which we finally found about 10:00 that night way out in the middle of nowhere. To this day, I still remember looking upward at the broadcast tower that night and it was illuminated, just like in the movie "American Graphitti". We were there from 11PM until 2AM. Clyde was gracious enough to dedicate many songs from us to our buddies

I was at the Moody Blues at Memorial Hall around the same time as the concert you have listed. It was fabulous! Did they do two concerts at that time? Comments:I was looking for an event in Kansas City in the 70's where Jessi Colter was the opening act for Waylon Jennings that was closed out by Dr. Hook. It looks like 12/4/1977 is the date although there was no mention of Dr. Hook. Jessi Colter sang for a long time. I'm Not Lisa is the only song I can remember she did that was worth listening to. Waylon made it on stage to sing a part of a song or two and then retired due to a sore throat (we figured he was stoned). Dr. Hook came on about an hour later and they were all stoned. Everytime they'd sing a song (they were mooning the audience) a thousand people would leave. After a shortened set the place was empty.

Comments:I came here in a search for info about the 7/31/1977 Summer Jam with Peter Frampton, Steve Miller, Styx and Rick Derringer. I see someone named Carol has also posted about that concert. I've always thought there was something historic about that concert, and that recollections and photos should be collected and preserved for it. I love the extensive KC concert list here, and wish there was a link that would allow us to read and post our recollections for each concert. Thanks for this site! It's a treasure trove of information, that's sure to grow. Got an error message with the first post; my apologies if this is a duplicate.

Comments:The concert on 8/24/71 was definitely Ten Years After with Procol Harem opening. Jethro Tull had played Cowtown earlier in the summer. The following summer (1972), Tull played Municipal Auditorium with the Eagles opening according to my information.

Comments:We use to listen to Beaker Street in Alexandria, LA in 1969-1973 on KAAY. We had to listen to Clyde in our car. It was worth it. Most of the time we would go out into the "woods" or country, crank up the music. Clyde always seemed to be more loaded than us, although I guess he wasn't. Then we would listen to Firesign Theatre, I think they came on between 2 and 4 a.m.

Comments:When I was 11 years old, ('71). I lived in a town called Fairmont, Minnesota. I used to stay awake w/ my Panasonic radio under my pillow and listen to Beaker Street and Beaker Theater until like 2AM. I luv'd listening to that great underground rock and old radio shows like Chandu the Magician. The War of the Worlds was aired on Beaker Theater... man that was some great chit. I can remember bein' so tired at school in those days. rofl Too bad I couldn't have recorded some of those broadcasts. Thank You Clyde and KAAY. Take Care. Peace

Comments:I have a ticket stub from an Emerson, Lake and Palmer concert I attended at Kemper Arena sometime in the late 70's. Their website claims they played an Arrowhead concert on Thursday Aug 18, 1977. Unfortunately, my ticket stub is torn in half and the only information I can gleem from it, is that this concert I attended was Tuesday night at 8:00 pm and that it was at Kemper arena and the cost was $7.50 . Do you have any record of this Kemper concert, as your list only shows ELP at Municipal Auditorium in Aug of 1972. I attended hundreds of concerts in Kansas City in the 70's and I kept all of my ticket stubs. I have several stubs from concerts that are not on your list. If you are interested, I can give you those dates so you can update your list. Love this website!!

Comments:I went to a Billy Joel concert in October 1978. I thought he was at Kemper. Also, I'm almost certain I was at a Rush concert at Municipal Auditorium in the fall or winter of 1977. Wasn't the Rod Stewart concert at Kemper in Nov 1977 the night before the roof collapsed? I came here looking for a band line-up from the Summer Jam Concert on July 31, 1977. I know Peter Frampton headlined and Steve Miller had a laser-light show---the first time I'd ever seen such a thing! I was trying to remember some of the other bands. Help!

Comments:I enjoyed seeing this list. I lived in KC from 1953 thru 1977, and saw many shows there and the area. Here is my list which may not be 100% accurate, but is pretty close. I went to Univ of Kansas from 1972-1975. If the colloums don't line up, copy and paste them in 8 pt type, that shopuld help. Kansas City 1969-1977 STUB 1) Jefferson Airplane/ Danny Cox Memorial Hall X May 9, 1969 2) Vanilla Fudge Memorial Hall X Aug 6, 1969 3) Led Zeppelin Memorial Hall Nov. 5, 1969 4) Country Joe & the Fish Memorial Hall X Nov. 29, 1969 5) Iron Butterfly/Blues Image Memorial Hall Feb. 8, 1970 6) Delanie and Bonnie w/ Eric Clapton Memorial Hall X Feb 15, 1970 7) Jefferson Airplane/Chet Nichols Memorial Hall X Feb 28 1970 8) Steppenwolf Memorial Hall Mar 20, 1970 9) Illinois Speed Press/ Steve Miller Blues Band U

Comments:I lived in KC from my birth in 1953 through 1977, and just found your site. I recently put together for some frinds a CD compilation tribute to Beaker Street, and wish I had found your 1970 clip for that project. I loved listening to Clyde in 1969-1971, he was major influence on me, as was KCJC (remember Little Willie's show?) and KBEY, both cool underground FM stations back in the early 70's. Here is my concert list for those days, hope this helps:I am nearly certain the dates and venues are correct, though a few may be wrong. If you copy and paste this list , and reduce to 8 pt type, the collums will line up better. Kansas City 1969-1977 STUB 1) Jefferson Airplane/ Danny Cox Memorial Hall X May 9, 1969 2) Vanilla Fudge Memorial Hall X Aug 6, 1969 3) Led Zeppelin Memorial Hall Nov. 5, 1969 4) Country Joe & the Fish Memorial Hall X Nov. 29, 1969 5) Iron Butterfly/B

Comments:Very cool web-site. I typed in beaker street earlier this year and found a web-site for beaker street and found that the radio show was being taken off the air. I had no idea it was still on. I got to e-mail Clyde to ask a question though. A little while later he e-mailed me back with an answer to my question and said they were going back on air on another station.Great to hear his voice and the background sounds on your web-site, also the lists of artists that he played. I can not thank you enough. Peace
